Are Samoans And Tongans A Different Etnicity or Race?

I've come across a couple of forums online of people who suggest Tongans and Samoans are a separate race. To most other people, we may view you as one race and ethnicity, Polynesian or Pacific Islander. Do you consider yourself a different race or ethnicity or simply another nationality?

I haven't read any research to suggest this is true, especially when we are from the same geographical region. All that differs is some subtleties in our respective cultures.

I think they are quite distinct from one another.

The 'Overview' is the same re: Family, Funeral, Weddings [etc] in terms of Relations/Contribution etc, however the processes are markedly different.

Actually, you're right on that. I observe Tongan culture to be quite distinct from Samoan, but not enough to be completely different.

no question Samoan and Tongan are the same people, the question how ignorant we can be in telling the difference. More Samoanhave same Fijian blood as Tongan. In fact, the Tuitonga who is considered a sacred ruler of Tonga of past was a full blooded Samoan who lived in Samoa, not Tonga for over 300 years. Again, there is no difference between a Samoan and Tongan, its only when the younger generations who came to the U.S who perpetuated this myth, call it nationalism, call it whatever, the truth is already known. Only ignorance preclude those younger generations from learning the truth. Tofa Soifua and Malo aupito

I totally Agree NiuZila - India is a Prime example of this whereby Indian 'Groups'/Tribes are similar, however are distinct from one another as the Regions they are from are so between themselves across such a vast expanse of Land - Called India.
