Sex Video Shock

Samoa Observer
11-08-2011 10:18

A St Mary's College student has been expelled after a sexually explicit video she had taken of herself circulated to cell phones across Samoa. The sex video was also reportedly posted on the internet.

The video depicts the 16-year-old girl in a sexual activity. Director of Catholic Education, Ae'au Chris Hazelman said the girl's actions have embarrassed the Catholic Education system and her family.

The incident, he said, was the final straw for the student who underwent disciplinary actions with the school before. He did not reveal the identity of the girl but confirmed that she is a Year 12 student.

"The principal and teachers decided to expel her because she was punished before and was given one final chance," said Aeau. "Once this video of her was found last week on the school compound the decision to expel her was finalised. "He said the incident was the first of its kind to be reported.

"We have dealt with alcohol, poor sportsmanship, teenage relationships and many other scenarios but this time we are dealing particularly with technology and how fast it spreads." Ae'au warned students and parents to be cautious about the technological advances of today and how it is being misused.

He said parents should always monitor how their children are using such devices. The Director offered a public apology on behalf of the school for the actions of this girl. She messed up, she made a big mistake and she is very sorry," said Aeau.

"But let this be a lesson to all students not just students from Catholic schools. It is a pity, a real pity but it is a harsh lesson." The video was taken at home in the privacy of her room but those with the technical 'know how' had distributed it to cell phones and posted it on the internet.

"Our children are now part of a global problem, we ask parents to work together so that they are always aware of how their children use such devices and the content or material that they are exposed to." St Mary's College is saddened by what has happened but this has not stopped them from helping the troubled teen.

The Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) met last Saturday to discuss the issue. Ae'au said parents were concerned for the young girl and her wellbeing. The sisters from the school are now visiting her on a regular basis and offer counseling and help with her school work. However, the Director admits that an incident involving the girls was bound to happen.

"It has always been the boys causing all the riots and problems and now we have an incident involving a girl. The video triggered the school fights in town last Thursday. "The school fights last Thursday was purely and specifically caused because students from other schools had made insulting comments to St Marys girls about the video.

"He said St Joseph's College students then stepped in to help their "sister school". "It is natural that when someone insults your sister you do not stand by and watch, so this is why the boys reacted the way they did."

Catholic Education is taking the issue very seriously and the parents of the girl have been notified about what has happened.Aeau stresses that in such incidents one must not point the finger but find ways to solve the problem.

c'mon mate..i can't post a 15-yr old girl's lewd video on a public website..
anyway..don't know what the big deal is..just a girl in her pubes experimenting with herself..and captured on video..yikes..there are worse things in this country like rape and incest and that sort of sh-it to worry about..
anyway, don't know why she was expelled..the responsible thing the catholic education system should have done is to talk to their young girls about growing into womanhood, sexual development and not to repress their sexual urges..at that age, if you don't want to f*ck, then there is definitely something wrong with you..o, and responsible use of cell phones..

They might also have to incorporate technological responsibility into the Sex Education Curriculum.

'Do not get caught with your pants down' Module 2.3.

I think Mr Lesa says everything in his editorial today:

What every serious parent in this country has been dreading has now happened. While weve embraced so many wonderful technological advances, it would be remiss of us to say we didnt anticipate the negative side to follow. It was never a question of whether it would happen or not. It was only a matter of time.
Today in Samoa, a sex video produced by a Year 12 student attending an all female school is sending shockwaves across this country (see story front page). Reports that the video has been posted on the internet add fuel to the fire.

As youre reading this, that video is probably making way from phone to phone. If you are a parent with children at college, you might want to check what theyve got on their phones. The chances are some of them would have already seen the video. The Director of Catholic Education, Aeau Chris Hazelman says the girls actions have embarrassed the Catholic Education system and her family. As a result, they have expelled her.

Says Aeau; The principal and teachers decided to expel her because she was punished before and was given one final chance.
Once this video of her was found last week on the school compound the decision to expel her was finalised.

A troubled student? Thats got to be the understatement of the moment in light of what has surfaced. Adds Aeau; We have dealt with alcohol, poor sportsmanship, teenage relationships and many other scenarios but this time we are dealing particularly with technology and how fast it spreads.

Are we to blame our children for embracing technology?
Are we to blame technology for poisoning our young minds?
Absolutely not.

This has nothing to do with the availability of these wonderful technological advances. It has nothing to do with our young minds embracing technology and using them for the right reasons. What has happened here shows whats possible when such tools are abused and misused.

To an extent, we agree that the girls actions have embarrassed St Marys College, the Catholic Education system, her family, church, village and so forth. On that note, we acknowledge Aeau and the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary for their heartfelt apology.

We feel for them and applaud their courage to take ownership of the problem.
But the burden of shame should not be for St Marys and the Catholic Education system to carry alone.

This is an embarrassment for all of us as a community and a country. It speaks of how far weve slid in terms of morals and values.

Who taught this young girl to do this? What are our young girls watching? Who allowed her to watch whatever? Where were her parents? Where did the person who then distributed the video get the idea from?

Who posted it on the internet for the world to see? All these questions can be summed up by this one question; how did Samoa allow this to happen?
There is something terribly amiss in the make up of society today.

This column has said it before and we will say it again, the moral fibre of this country is slowly and surely rotting.

Why? You know the answer. I know the answer. Lets not point the finger at each other. Lets not blame X, Y and Z for what has happened. We all need to sit down and look deep within ourselves. We need to do self-inventory as a community. Ill ask myself and you should ask yourself, how did we allow this to happen?
The solution has to start from within each and every one of us.

preachy-preachy rubbish from Keni..here's a more balanced view from our sub-editor..

Shes a kid, not the devil
By Renate Rivers
The uproar surrounding a video made by a Year 12 female student from one of Samoa's top schools has once again cast a negative spotlight on the youth of the nation.
Adding to recent incidents of public brawling between rival colleges, the school girl's pornographic video has rubbed more salt in to a wound that continues to fester and show no signs of healing.
According to reports from the coconut wireless, the girl had filmed herself masturbating for her boyfriend. When the relationship soured, he is believed to have uploaded it on to the internet. When the video went viral, she was expelled from her school, punished by her mother then taken in by nuns. It almost sounds like a plot for a Hollywood movie, albeit the blue variety, and this sensational storyline continues to feed the rumor-mill currently working in overdrive.
Without dwelling too much on the actual video itself, which has made the rounds around town, it's become apparent that vilification of this girl is not going to end until blood has been spilt.

She has been called everything unprintable under the sun. An outcast amongst her own peers and judged even by people who have no understanding of what happened, save for tidbits and innuendo spreading like wildfire.
This is how lynch-mobs begin their unstoppable assault.

Before we all rush to burn her at the stake, it would be wise to consider the end result of all this self-righteous and judgmental behaviour.

Behaviour of young men and women has not changed dramatically in generations. Pardoning the pun but self-exploration and discovery of ones sexuality is not something new.
So why the backlash? Because of the fia mama tendencies of many of our Church-going yet un-Christian populace.
For a country that is supposedly founded on God, and a religious dogma based on forgiveness and love there has been a severe lack of Christian charity since this scandal hit the streets.

The girl is just that, a girl. She is young and has made a mistake. Youd think this was an alien concept to humanity!

The disturbing part of this entire episode is the speed and ease with which the video went viral. Not just within the community of students, but within the general population. Everyone from school teachers, to taxi drivers, to public servants have seen this video.
Have we overlooked the fact that this is child pornography?

The person responsible for uploading this online, or instigating the viral nature of its release should be held accountable. Whether it was an ex-boyfriend, or a friend of a friend, or as a sick joke those responsible need to be made aware, via judicial intervention, that their actions have set-off a chain of events that will most likely tarnish this girls reputation for the rest of her life. It is not to be taken lightly.
Unlike indiscretions of past generations, of which there are examples aplenty, the unique nature of this girls actions lie with the fact it is on video, and has been submitted to the vacuum of the world wide web of which there is no return.
So even as time passes, and memories fade, there will always be evidence of her apparent misdeed floating somewhere in cyberspace, awaiting further condemnation.
Which begs the question, where will it all end? Will satisfaction only be met with her demise?
And what of the rumors that her family had been banished from their village? If this is true, it is sad and unbelievable.
Shame and dishonor come in different shades, one must be careful in determining the overall picture and the appropriate punishment.
If answering the call of ones sexuality is a crime and punishable by banishment then most of this nations adults would be living on freehold property, unaligned with scarlet letters sewn to their clothing.
Let he without sin cast the first stone.
We must be very careful that this story does not end in a much more tragic and shameful way. No scandal is ever worth the life of a person, and it is my sincere hope that this girl takes what strength she has, and remains resolute in the face of the judgment and vilification she will undoubtedly face for years to come.
She could be your friend, your daughter, your sister. She is just a young girl who made a mistake.

I've never read or heard about Females revealing the explicit nature of their Relationships during or after a break-up, however it seems to be common form amongst the Male Species.

It wasn't that long ago that Ex Partner of Australian Model Lara Bingle circulated a nude shot of her in the Shower causing Bingle's then Fiance Cricketer Michael Clarke to go into meltdown and break-off their engagement. The thing is: The shot was taken by Bingle's Ex Fevola when they were an item and while she was having a shower. I didn't understand what the uproar was all about at the time as Bingle is one of Australia's premier swimsuit Models and so naturally she's mostly less than half-naked on the majority. Furthermore, she wasn't posing in explicit form, but having a shower hence the nudity and of course all the Ugly witches in the Media had a Field day in order to bring the Bingle/Clarke house down ... which worked.

And who can forget Paris Hilton's Ex Rick Solomon making Public their Sex Tape?

I remember reading an issue of Cleo magazine years ago which advised and reminded Female Readers to hold onto sex tapes and explicit photos [if they can't help themselves lol] as well as refraining from making copies as all can be rosy and dandy during the relationship; however when things go sour; numerous cases have revealed that the aforementioned content can get into the wrong hands and go viral if its whereabouts are not kept in check and under lock and key during the relationship.

A funny Story my Dad told me a few years ago as we walked to the Shower when I was in the Village:

He was in the Village at the time and was getting ready to go into Town. His shower hadn't been installed in his House yet and so he was using his Uncle's outdoor Shower at the bottom of the Hill. When he arrived at the Shower, his teenage Cousin was already in there having a Shower and so naturally he waited patiently as according to his calculations, Cousin should be done in another 15 minutes or so.

Well, lo and behold, Dad waited and waited; Cousin was taking forever!. "Hey Boy! How much longer are you going to take?"

"I'll be finished soon" called out the Cousin.

Another 10 minutes passed and the Cousin still hadn't finished and so Dad calls out again to hurry him up.

And again, Cousin responds that he's nearly done.

On and on this went back and forth; Dad telling him to hurry up and finish having a shower and Cousin responding that he'll be finishing up soon when Dad completely agitated by this stage and having had enough of waiting; got up from where he was sitting and yanked the shower door open with rage only to find his Cousin under the shower hard-out masturbating!! Hahaha!

My Dad just pissed himself laughing so hard! LOL! He went from being angry to outright nearly falling over with laughter at the sight before him. And to make it even funnier; the Cousin totally freaked out and begged my Dad not to tell anyone, LMAO!

And by the way, he fully demonstrated what he saw when he opened the shower door as he was telling me the story, hahaha!

i think the catholic education system missed a great opportunity to tackle this new problem head-on..but like everything else here, the system takes the easy way out..cop-out..the girl has a bit of spunk and spirit, which could be channelled in the right direction..who knows, maybe she could potentially be a future doctor and end up saving lives..then who really gives a flying f#ck what she got up to at school..

People, people. So quick to draw silly conclusions.

I don't think Keni is referring EXCLUSIVELY to the young female in question nor the practice of masturbation for that matter lol.

I think he also cites the observation that for this video to make the rounds in Samoa, Australia, NZ and probably even America now - there had to be demand for its circulation. People young and old alike were probably watching it, and something tells me that many were watching it more then once.

This is what he means when he argues that the moral fibre of Samoa is on the way to obliviation. In some countries this video is child pornography.

This is why most people favour the Samoa Observer. They have editorials that actually make sense.

This is not a problem for the girl, the Catholic Church, her family or even the village. This is a national problem because it takes the NATION to circulate the footage as far afield as it did - only to land online for the WORLD to see.

People that instigated the matter further by sending it to their contacts are also as equally responsible for the situation. See-double claims to have the video and yet he's a village matai for example.

Samoa Observer needs a golden globe hehe.

I agree with what see double wrote, i dont agree much with what you say but i do this time.haha. It was a great opprotunity not only for the catholic education system but the education system, nation wide to hit the problem head on. Firstly they should introduce sex education in school, there should be workshops done through the church to advise parents that they must talk to their children in regards to their sexuality when the age comes right. As the church is the centre of the village.
I also remember growing up, you hear or were told by your cousins and friends about sex. Our parents never talked to us and made it clear that it was a natural thing in life to feel or want to have a sexual relationship. I am a firm believer in our cultural beliefs, however some of our beliefs, that is inappropriate to talk about sex to your children is wrong. Parents should talk to their children in regards to these things. Our society has to change in order for this problem to go away.

In this day and age of advanced and mass technological use whereby words and images can be spread across the Globe at the click of a button; I truly believe the Authorities need to crackdown and charge persons for circulating obscene material intended for personal use that ends up going viral.

There are already Laws in place dealing with 'Defamation', 'Intellectual property' as well as 'Viewing Guidelines' and now there needs to be a Law established in relation to dispersing sexually explicit material intended for private usage. The current technological environment has called for an avenue be set up in order for 'Victims' to press charges.

I'm surprised that Lara Bingle did not press charges on Fevola for distributing the nude photo of her in the Shower re: PRIVATE; in which She was clearly caught UNAWARE.

I agree with you Tamavaimauga! And you know we always agree on this subject which has a tendency to crop up every few months or so, LOL.

Isn't Teenage pregnancy rampant in Samoa with School Aged Mothers [15 - 16 yr olds] something of the norm in this day and age? In light of the increasing Teenage pregnancy rate; School Aged Girls in Samoa are obviously having sex. I'm certain that no one has ever told the current crop of teenage Mothers that their Lives have pretty much ended with a Baby.

That Stupid Boy who circulated the Video was damn lucky that the Girl at the centre of all the attention put out for him in the first place. Don't School Aged Boys usually have sex with OLDER Women? [Haha]. It's probably the reason why no Girl at my High School ever dated a High School Boy - they are so immature. Bring on the School Leavers, Haha!

You must be a theologian because you're speaking GOSPEL right now hehe.

Samoan society seriously doesn't know how to deal with youth issues. The church's answer on it appears to be siva faaleagaga lol
