Samoan Warriors (Great Navigators)

Their are too many Samoan War Stories so I am going to only list a few.......

1) The great Manu'a Samoa Warrior Fitiaumua conquered Tonga, Fiji & many other islands and set up the Tui Titles in Tonga & Fiji, all islands payed tribute to Tu'i Manu'a.....

2) Cook Islands History states that Tu'i Manu'a Ali'a Matua or Karika, the ancestor of the present Makea family in RaroTonga, came originally from an island to the westward named Manuka or Manu'a. This Karika or Ali'a Matua was a mighty warrior and a great navigator, who, in his peregrinations at sea, discovered the island of Rarotonga and later ruled the island of RaroTonga giving birth to the Makea-Karika title........

3) Pili & Paao of Upolu Samoa traveled to Hawaii and ruled Hawaii..... Hawaiians referred to Pili and other Samoan Warriors as (SHARKS ON LAND). Hawaiian King David Kalakaua even states in his book that the Kamehameha Royal Family line came from Pili & Paao of SAMOA.(This was by far the longest voyage)

4) Samoan Warriors & Tuna & Fata of Savaii defeated Tu'i Tonga and all the Tongan Warriors. The Tongan King begging for mercy screaming Malie Toa Malie Tau gave birth to the title Malietoa.

Samoans were great Navigators who traveled across the South Pacific ruling and inhabiting other islands....

The first ever painting of a Polynesian sailing double canoe was done by an artist in the crew of the Dutch Captain Jacob LeMaire, who encountered a Samoan canoe between Samoa and Tonga on the 8 May 1616. On the sail was a big picture of a MOA.

These are some of the reasons why I have so much pride in being Samoan........ That photo with the Samoan Canoe and the MOA on the sail if you find the original painting that Canoe with the MOA symbol on the sail was leading hundreds of canoes.......

As soon as Malietoa rose to power Tongans lost hold of many other islands due to the loss in Samoa......... Its funny because in the 1800's Tongans invaded Fiji (Maafu) and were successful but in the 1800's when Tonga tried to Invade Samoa they didnt get passed one village (Falealupo)..........

yep. i also think the Malietoa family has been misinterpreted. The tongans simply described the samoans as Malie toa. brave warriors. they weren't alluding to a family at all! or even a name.

some of those stories are interesting. but in 1616, how would he know they were samoans?

and the picture was of a 'MOA'? what do you mean? the word? a chicken as in samoa or a moa as in maori, like the big birds, or simply a bird?

be interested to hear what you say. thank you

It is a Samoan canoe for Samoa simply means the family or clan of MOA....... The MOA is our symbol etc.......

Just like Malietoa Feai who was a great warrior, all his war canoes had a picture of a MOA on the sail...... MOA is basically our symbol etc

This Malietoa hater is irritating. He needs to research his own heritage. He's just trying to be controversial and make people fight but hey, use the rock when you go next time to research your grass hut or even better use your head cos its like a rock. Malo vale.

This is how I know you are slow that picture was drawn in 1616, 400+ years ago by a palagi man who was sailing the open sea and spotted the canoe. As we all know the name SA(MOA) simply means the family/clan of MOA..... MOA was a ancient and sacred Samoan family/clan from Manu'a who many believe were the first inhabitants of the islands of Samoa etc It is from this ancient & sacred Family that we SA(MOA)NS got the name SA(MOA).

I Agree with Anoni the malietoa had no canoe, if he did have a canoe what was it called which village builted?? Tulouna le suafa Malietoa, But Malietoa was a matupalapala warriors of samoa are Nafanua, Fonoti,Tuimanu'a. They made wars and there are evidence of the wat happened. But the War between Tuna and Fata and Tui Toga was War in a sense because the name Malietoa was given as a Matupalapala, it will be different if Tuna and Fata chased Tui Toga into the sea and cut his head and brought the ao back to Samoa. NO! Na alu atu Tui Toga Tu mai i lona sa ma fai mai ua malie toa ua malo tau, oute le toe sa i aoauli tau a'e oute sau i aouli o folau. That canoe on the picture with the MOA on it I believe came from MANU'A...... But why is it that Samoans in Western Samoa didnt have canoes? Is Western Samoa not like the rest of Samoa who all had canoes? You said Malietoa had no canoes? This is where I prove you wrong......

Samoan Canoes (REMEMBER ALOT OF THESE CANOES WERE USED FOR MANY DIFFERENT OCCASIONS BUT IM GOING TO ONLY LEAST 1 OCCASION FOR EACH)

Alia - Was used for war, this Samoan war canoe could carry up to 300 people.

Taumualua - Used for travel.

Soatau - Used for war aid.

Paopao - Used for fishing in shallow water.

Vaa Alo - Fishing for bonito or tuna

Fautasi - Long boat used for shark fishing called tiuga malie.

Fearsome Samoan Warrior Funefeai - Had two fleets or war canoes

1. TA ILE VAI
2. TA ILE TAI.

But his personal favorite was the (Pualele).......

In ancient SAMOA, Samoans didnt really have too many name for their war canoes. Ancient Samoans would decorate their war canoes with idols that they thought would bring luck on the battle field. Like the legendary (Limulimu Tau = War Canoe) that they used and covered with sea weed.

The Samalaulu = War Canoe

Malietoa Sagagaimuli who was known in Polynesia as a Wild & Blood thirsty Warrior also had fleets of canoes. His fleets had a rooster (MOA) on the sail just like the photo on this post. (LIKE I SAID THE (MOA) WAS LIKE OUR SYMBOL THAT REPRESENTED THE ANCIENT SACRED FAMILY/CLAN OF MOA WHO WERE FROM MANU'A AND WERE BELIEVED TO BE THE FIRST INHABITANTS OF THE SAMOA ISLANDS AS A WHOLE). Malietoa Sagagaimuli was from the Vaimauga district of APIA on the island of Upolu in SAMOA......

Sole aua ke faapega li uso e leai se ese ese ga a Savaii, Tutuila, Upolu ma Manua etc O kakou uma a SAMOA...... SAMOA MO SAMOA

So mamalu of Tui Toga was not given to Malietoa because he kept his head and went back to Tonga.

Well the fact remains the Maleitoa clan were always in power or contending for power in Samoa from the time the Tongans left til now. The Tuimanu'a's power died down, and Tama Aiga have been in the mix but Malietoa is the one who has been in control the most during the modern era.
